There are security implications, and obsolete short URLs remain in existence and may be circulated long after they cease to point to a relevant or even extant destination. For example, say you are using UTM codes to track website traffic.
For example, New York Times uses the shortened address “nyti.ms”. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better.
Here are some guidelines: Campaign Name This field should contain some of the most specific information about what kind of email this is. We then redirect the user to the destination URL. The goo.gl service provides analytics details and a QR code generator.[citation needed] On 30 March 2018 Google announced that it is "turning down support for goo.gl over the coming weeks and replacing it with Firebase Dynamic Links" (although existing goo.gl links will continue to function).[19] Advantages[edit] The main advantage of a short link is that it is, in fact, short, looks neat and clean and can be easily communicated and entered without error.[20] To a very limited extent it may obscure the destination of the URL, though easily discoverable; this may be advantageous, disadvantageous, or irrelevant. When you add Google Analytics tracking to an email campaign, we supply a default title for your campaign that will appear in your Google Analytics account and your tracking URLs.
Shorten URL (e.g. bit.ly/buSzh) is meaningless because readers don’t know where the link is directing to. It is reserved for campaigns using paid keywords. For example, .in, the TLD for India, is good for names ending in the "en" or "in" sound. .es, Spain's TLD, is good for plural names ending in "-es". You can shorten a link right away, although you’ll need to enter a CAPTCHA code. It should give some feel for the content of the email.
To manage click tracking in the plain-text version of your campaign, check or uncheck Track plain-text clicks. Click Save. And if I was using Twitter.com to Tweet as I sometimes do, then I wouldn’t use one, I’d just let Twitter shorten it.
Bit.ly, which is what we integrate with in CoSchedule, uses a 301 redirect. Shortened links allow you to share long URLs in a Tweet while maintaining the maximum number of characters for your message.
