This point was underscored a few days ago when a popular one, tr.im, announced they were going to shut down at the end of the year. This means you couldn't register, for example, domain.uk.
A common example of this is when publishers want to pre-populate a lead generation form with user contact information to help improve conversion rates. Google Analytics won't work if there is a space after the URL in the campaign. MailChimp reports provide a few different metrics for measuring click activity on a campaign report. What was especially interesting for me was seeing how these tracking links indicate people sharing the event with their networks, and the resulting ticket sales.
